Wednesday at the Stavanger Major: Midday Update

It was all about the men Wednesday morning at the Swatch Major Series in Stavanger, Norway, and the Brazilians continued to roll. In the afternoon, women's Pool play will join in, including the tournament's top seeds as well as podium finishers from the Poreč Major.

In stark contrast to the steamy beach volleyball weather of the Poreč Major, the second day of the Swatch Major Series stop in Stavanger, Norway opened under gray skies and a chilling mist on June 10. But the players hardly seemed to notice. By noon, sixteen men's Qualification matches were in the books.
Despite a Scandinavian climate that couldn't be more different from the familiar sands of Copacabana Beach, where Olympic matches will make history in 2016, the passion of the Brazilian men remains undampened. On Center Court, top-seeded Alvaro Filho and Vitor Felipe easily eliminated the number 32-seeded brothers Oliver and Sebastian Kaszas of Denmark, who were aiming to Qualify for a World Tour Main Draw for the first time.
Simultaneously on Court 3, former World Champion Marcio Araujo of Brazil and his green new partner Saymon Barbosa showed just how much synergy they're building together in avoiding elimination by pulling off an upset aganst the fifth-seed Polish team of Michal Bryl and Jakub Szalankiewicz.

And there's much more to come in the afternoon. Both Brazilian teams will battle the same cold conditions, but new opponents, in the second make-or-break Qualifying round in the afternoon.

Also taking the sand will be the Italian men who left a wake of destabilized opponents in sailing to the Poreč Major bronze: Alex Ranghieri and Adrian Carambula. Seeded 13th in Stavanger, the ebullient pair downed 20th seeds Pablo Bianchi and Julian Azaad from Argentina on Wednesday morning, but face possible elimination by the dangerous fourth-seeded German duo of Markus Böckermann and Lars Flüggen as the day's action continues. Another match featuring a men's tandem from Italy is also tipped as one to watch, when the ninth-seeded Ingrosso twins – Matteo and Paolo – square off against the number eight seeds from Mexico, Lombardo Ontiveros L. and Juan Virgen, in a no-holds-barred fight to make it into Thursday's Main Draw.
Women's Main Draw group play – with 32 teams commencing their push to make it out of eight pools, gets going in the afternoon. Top teams in action against the international lineup will include number one seed Agatha Bednarczuk and Barbara Seixas of Brazil, as well as the silver and bronze medalists from the Poreč Major, Heather Bansley and Sarah Pavan of Canada and the Australian team of Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy.
